Barry in Indonesia - Update November 2007
barry1.jpg

Dear friends at Harmony Hill,

Here is an update on the theology faculty project. We had hoped to begin work in July, but because of some difficulties with the transfer of cash and the slowness of things here, it is only in the past couple of weeks that the work has begun.

Now it is started however, the work is progressing very fast and we now have a transformed kitchen. It's all been freshly painted, walls and window frames. The old blackened cement work surfaces are now tiles with cream marble effect tiles, and the floor tiled. Also the adjoining storerooms and bathroom have been painted and tiled and new corrugated iron has been put on the roof so that there will be no more leaks when it rains. The rocky path leading from the kitchen has been the cause of a few accidents and will soon be cemented. A septic tank and new drain pipes have been installed for waste water. At the moment we are looking for a stainless steel gas cooker and fridge to finish off the work on the kitchen.

Some of the students have said they want to move to live in the kitchen and others have commented that lunch and dinner menus are already beginning to become more inspired. With so many students being accommodated in the Asrama we feel it is really important for a good standard of hygiene to be maintained in the kitchen. The drinking water problem can to a large degree be solved by providing each dormitory unit with a stove so that wach unit can boil their own water. Apparently if they drink enough water the high lime content in the water should  not be so much of a problem. Most health problems at the moment are caused by students not drinking ehough.

Our next focus is improving study facilities through providing extra desks for each dormitory and also through setting up a smal computer room for the typing of assignments. Five computers have already been purchased and once the litchen is finish the bulders will begin renovating a small room for this purpose.

Once again we wish to express our thanks for all this help which has been provided by Harmony Hill togther wth  West Church, Bangor.

God Bless,

Barry, Elsye, Rececca and Gisell McCroskery
